But seriously, I often ask the question to other people (usually in some very unoffical setting) "How many voices do you hear in your head?"

Yeah, I get some strange stares sometimes, but then I explain... Everyone thinks to themselves and most do it in a conversational style. You don't just hear the phrase "grocery store", when you are really hearing "I need to go to the grocery store." Most people hear it conversationally...

When I explain it that way, most people will respond with, "I dunno... Maybe one or two."

So then I explain further that in my own head, I usually have more than a single conversation going on at any given time. I have one that is usually discussing things like my schedule, while another may discuss with me the gorgeous view of the sky outside, and sometimes those discussions happen at the same time.

"Oh THAT..." will be the next response from someone I've asked. "I have two or three of those all the time."

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. Now in my head, I can honestly say when we come down to very open conversation that there are at least 5, sometimes 6, discussions going on at the same time. That is my normal... Some people have 2 or 3... Others have no idea what I am talking about.

I love music. So, one of the 'voices' is usually finding the most appropriate song for something currently going on in my life. The voice may be singing it to me all day long, like when people say "I have a song stuck in my head." With me, it isn't a song... It is more like a radio station that never goes off the air.

I also love history... So, as I am sitting or driving through a particular area, my history voice will very often be n the midst of reminding me of some trivial bit of historical knowledge. Meanwhile, my music voice may switch to singing "In 1814, we took a little trip... along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip." You get the idea...

I don't love science or mathematics, but one of my voices tends to be discussing those all the time as well. In my yard, I have lots of trees... I love treed areas, especially in my yard. But, I can help hearing those voices discussing what scale of wind it would take to knock over one of the 150 foot tall tulip poplars, and whether the distance from the tree to the house is great enough that it will miss. So, my voices begin calculating the angles of a right-triangle, and functioning through the Pythagorean Theorem... etc etc.

Some people would not describe what I experience as "voices", but instead would use terms like "an over active mind". The only difference between the voices in my head and those of a medically diagnosed schizophrenic are that mine don't 'command me'. Mine all know who is the boss, and it is a pretty good arrangement.

On the top of my blog, you'll see the comment "intellectual prowess = internal parallel conversations / time". I hope after reading the above explanations that you now understand the meaning behind this formula. It was meant to be funny...

Starting Over

It's been longer than 2 years since I've posted to this blog... I got all wrapped up listening to the loudest voices in my head; work (my job) and politics. :-( Sorry about that...

This blog was originally intended to be for fun. During my short sabbatical from this blog, I started a different blog for the political voice in my head. Sometimes, the voices need to be drained out and the resulting grey matter rebooted.

As a result, I took some time tonight to relax... turn off the news... turn on the iPad... and read a little "fun" stuff. Cracked.com is not a site for the light-hearted, but seems to be more for the dim-witted sometimes. :-) However, I found a particular article tonight to keep my interest for quite a while (at least a minute or two); The 5 Most Insane Original Uses of Famous Products. Of course, I think they stopped at 5 only out of laziness. Seems to me that in my own short 51 years, there have been hundreds of things that began with one purpose in mind and ended up making their mark in a completely different way.

So, with this post, I hope to begin a slightly less serious journey. Please come back often... Seeing that someone is reading this is a great boost to my need to write more.

Voices in My Head (Stephen Lynch)
